This place was awesome. It was a true diner experience. We are staying at the Ritz Carlton but will forego those fancy expensive restaurants to eat breakfast here. It's cheap, it's loud but it's great. Food is cooked to order and served quickly. Coffee is perfect. Loved it!

My friend and I found ourselves so bored with brunch choices in our C. Grove and South Beach hoods that we decided to head on over to Key Biscayne. We decided to see what the Donut Gallery had to offer after reading all the reviews. Much to this NYers delight, it is indeed a diner! For real diner. Now as folk mention, it's tiiiiiiiiiiny. In fact as you're circling that roundabout by the church looking for it, you'll be surprised to find it. FYI, it's tucked away in the strip mall sort of adjacent from the church roundabout. I ordered a veggie burger with lettuce, onions and an egg on top. Love an egg. Tasty and wonderful. My coffee was sort of weak and overall not very good. Diner cawfee should be good. That said I was enjoying the authentic as is vibe of the place so much, I didn't care. My friend ordered a poached egg and asked for a side of peanut butter for her toast. She was given a spoon with a fantastically huge scoop of PB...it was awesome. The family run, no frills scene was refreshing and very welcomed. It was so worth an afternoon away from South Beach, felt like being in the normal world. After our meal, we hit the neighboring Golden Hog...review to follow! We'll be returning to the Donut Gallery soon!

Donut Gallery is a family owned restaurant and has been a staple of Key Biscayne life since I was born (and far before from my understanding). I grew up on Key Biscayne and the quick and tasty breakfast from Donut Gallery is hard to beat in a pinch - especially before a beach day. My personal favorite is the Ted Special (Bacon, Ham, Cheese, Tomato and Egg, served open face on an English muffin) with hash browns and a side of banana chocolate chip pancakes. They are pricey, but it is par for the course in Key Biscayne and still cheaper than any of the other breakfast options on the island. Their service is fast and you'll feel like part of the family while you sit on one of the stools and look over the photos on the wall. One more thing to mention, they are CASH ONLY but do have an ATM on-site.

DG is an interesting place to say the least. The staff here is very attentive despite the fact that they seem to be moving 200 mph within the constricted confines of the tiny diner. As far as the food, the place offers your standard diner selection. By far the star of the show was their Zumex natural orange juice maker which diligently squeezes out the finest cup of Gold liquid ever to hit human lips. Besides that nothing was exceptional and the description many reviewers used of "no-frills" is spot on. While this place is on the more expensive side as far as diners are concerned, it is probably the most affordable place to grab a bite in Key Biscayne.

We ended up here early on a Saturday morning looking for a no-frills breakfast, and that's what we got. Thankfully some seats were open along the wall so my party split up into pairs which wasn't too big of a deal as you can easily spin around on your stool to talk to those behind you. They were ready to take our order immediately and the food came out pretty fast too. Whether you are looking for pancakes, eggs, french toast, a sandwich or more, they have a versatile menu that can fit your breakfast needs. It's a different kind of dining experience that is all but lost in the Miami area. It seemed a little pricey for what it is but it appears many are willing to bite the bullet and visit this hole-in-the-wall diner as a start to their morning!

Was on the fence between two and three stars. Old fashion diner, counter and a few two top tables. I had the key biscayne, two eggs, two pancakes, two sausage patties. Eggs ok, sausage a little dry, but the pancakes did not come w the eggs and it took some effort to flag someone down. Syrup was log cabin/aunt jemima or something w/o a lot of flavor. The high point was the delicious fresh squeezed oj. So if you're on the key it's ok, but don't go out of your way.

We ate here every morning during our stay in Key Biscayne. The breakfast food was phenomenal. I would definitely not agree that the food is "no frills" but the restaurant definitely would fall under that category as far as scenery/ambiance. I had the Spanish omelet and some kind of amazing French toast sandwich with eggs, ham, bacon and veggies that was perfect for a pregnant lady (me)! The staff was extremely personable and we made "friends" with several since we were there several days in a row. If you're looking for delicious home made food and hanging with the locals at one of the only places you can avoid breaking the bank on the island, this is it!

Hmmmm, I've had way better (S&S diner). This place is friendly and the prices are very inexpensive. The food??? Its just okay. I had the burger with cheese (and bacon but they forgot the bacon), fries, and a small order of chicken wings. The Hubbs had the Spanish omelet with coffee. The burger was meh, the bun was super white and soft, the meat small, the condiments scarce. The cheese was good but could have been better with some pork on top. The fries were skinny and the chicken wings pre frozen and deep fried. These are some of my favorite foods and I was longing for a re-do afterward. My Baby's omelet was good. Nothing special. We probably will not be back since there so many other great places to eat in Miami, including my own house ;)

This place was terrible. The servers/owner interrogated me about my ethnic background while I was trying to eat, joked in Spanish that I don't speak Spanish well, brought out mediocre food, got confrontational when I tried to use a credit card because NOWHERE in that restaurant does it say you have to pay cash- and then to top it all off- they overcharged me!!! I will NEVER go back to this crappy place.

I went here a few weeks back for breakfast. The atmosphere is definitely that of a traditional diner. It felt like home because the staff is made up of a group of caring women that make you feel welcome. The food was ok, but what was best was the homey feeling of the place. My only complaint is that they do not accept credit cards. I ordered the breakfast special, but could only finish about half the pancakes. I also ordered orange juice but to my dismay, it was not naturally squeezed orange juice. I would suggest that they have natural juices... it would make it all the much better. It seems like it is a family place because most of the customers are known by name. In fact, when it is time to say goodbye even an "I love you" comes out from these cute women. I will definitely go back to see if eventually I also get an "I love you."
This was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever endured. I'd been here before and was actually looking forward to bringing a friend from out of town and catching up over breakfast. Never again. My friend ordered the veggie omelet with feta and I ordered the veggie omelet without cheese. Our food came and my friend asked for maple syrup for her omelet. Strange, I know, but that's what she likes. As I bit into my omelet I realized there was feta inside. I don't eat dairy products but no big deal. The server told us that she had accidentally switched our omelets so "why don't we just switch back?". That would have been fine but my friend had poured syrup on what she thought was her omelet and I didn't care to eat that. I have worked in restaurants and have made my share of mistakes and was not upset at all. I simply wanted what I ordered. The server reordered my veggie omelet and at this point the owner came over to where we were seated and this is when the trouble began. He was immediately caustic and confrontational. He asked what the problem was as though we had done something wrong. He told us he had made the orders so he knew they were right. When I explained I was given the omelet with cheese and my friend was given the omelet without cheese he told us that it was our fault she had put the syrup on the wrong omelet. I could not believe what I was hearing. I guess investigative work is a prerequisite for eating at this dump because how was I supposed to know I had the wrong omelet? The ingredients are inside the omelet not sitting on top of it! Had we ordered a Greek Salad with feta and a Greek Salad without feta then I could definitely see his point. I always thought it was part of the restaurant experience to get what you ordered, apparently here it's more of a russian roulette experience. After the owner's verbal attack, we were so uncomfortable that we asked for take-out boxes so that we could immediately leave. I will say the servers were very nice and apologetic. I am guessing this was not the first time they had witnessed one of his unnecessary freak-outs. Unless your the type whose into mental abuse and public humiliation, I would not recommend this restaurant. Furthermore, the food wasn't good. Not awful but definitely not good.

One of the few places left on the Key that actually reminds me it's still the place I grew up and call home. Yes the prices are crazy and the food is mediocre but this is part of our past in the US, Miami, and Key Biscayne we cant lose site of or let slip away. If that takes paying silly prices every once in a while so they can pay their most likely ridiculous rent, then so be it.

Take your family for a beautiful drive to Key Biscayne. Stop at this diner (no donuts) and let them see how Americans ate before fast food and Starbucks littered every corner of our country. Its loud, crowded and a little expensive, but it works. My waitress, Lauri, somehow got our complicated order correct without even writing it down. My son's apple juice was taken away before he finished and replaced with a fresh bottle no charge. Its fun to watch the husband and wife owners/chef bark back and forth the orders and watch it all delivered with perfect choreography. Too bad there aren't more places like this left, but they have had this going for 40 years. Next door is an amazing gourmet grocery store if you feel the need for an espresso after.

First off, I visited Key Biscayne recently for a fishing trip. As a Texan, I am used to the majority of people being friendly. That is definitely not the case in south Florida... I found most of the people to be pretty rude. And the fact that I don't speak Spanish seemed to work against me. This place however was a delight! I popped in here at about 6:30am for a breakfast a week or so ago. It was nice to have a trip back to the past. I had a great conversation with a guy that I figured was probably the owner. The food isn't spectacular, but really, what breakfast is? The charm of this place is what you should go for.

I have stopped by twice so far for breakfast and definitely plan to return. The first time I had a turkey sandwich and although I thought it was great, I jealously stared over at a 5 year old boy eating what had to be the most delicious stack of chocolate chip pancakes I have ever seen. So I went back and ordered one of their combos, making the chocolate chip upgrade and went to town on those bad boys. The prices are good and the service is even "gooder"! I definitely recommend the place

this veritable diner is a clatter of dishes, happy voices, and smiles. it is a homespun, perfectly, imperfect somewhat gritty oasis amongst the botoxed and soma inducing glitterati places that have invaded an island paradise. no doughnuts though.

One of the few characteristic places left in the paradise lost of Key Biscayne. A pretty good breakfast/lunch counter restaurant as long as you keep it simple. They serve dinner on and off, you need to check before you go. Just don't go looking for donuts, they rarely have them.

Key Biscayne staple. This place fits all my requirements for a place to revisit often: 1. Enjoyable 2. Cheap 3. Fast service Great place for groups of 3 or less.

A hole-in-the wall with real charm. Where else can you walk in a complete stranger and have the counter person address you as "Baby?" Diner fare, great breakfasts. One word of warning: it's not for large groups - the tiny wall tables can only sit two - everyone else sits at the counter. It's a Key Biscayne tradition.

Pretty much the only reason its getting four stars is because I haven't happened across any other good diners since coming to Miami. The prices aren't cheap, but they're certainly not crazy. The staff is very friendly. They also had two nice TVs up on the wall for some Saturday football watching. Reminded me of diners up north. After getting my food, I had some regret. Their hash browns aren't made to order and the corned beef hash is not made fresh. Still tasted good and greasy though.

i don't know what Sasha B. expected at the Donut Gallery DINER, but it is exactly what it is & has been for 40 years. i have been frequenting the DG for years & i always get a great meal & lots of lively conversation. it's an AMERICAN-STYLE diner, therefore you are going to get American food, not latin-oriented food. That's the way the patriarch of the family started it & that's the way it has remained. This year is their 40th anniversary & they are having a month-long celebration, culminating on sept. 28th.Their breakfast is unparalleled . You get huge helpings of everything, so you are getting your money's worth, while filling up the tank at the same time. The coffee is bottomless, so you can ask for as many refills as you want. There's always someone coming around with the coffee pot, as well as conversation. If you are a recluse, it's not the place for you, as it's a friendly place & the people behind the counter interact with their customers & anticipate their every need. The diner is a throwback to another time - a nice oasis in a desert of so-so restaurants. It is decorated like a typical 50's diner - black & white tiles on the floor & stainless steel behind the counter. It has tv's for viewing sports & news & a nostalgia wall filled with customers pictures from many years back. You can see everything that's being prepared for your meal, as the kitchen is open to the public's view - because they have nothing to hide - it's scrubbed spotless daily. I know that because I have been present when they begin their close-down routine, having been in there for late lunch, right before their 3:00 pm closing many times. So for those who had a not-so-great experience, I urge you to give it another try. I'll bet if you open your mind to the concept of what it represents - a time long ago - good food at a good price & lots of it, with some old-style friendliness & great customer service. It's my most favorite place to eat in all of Miami! Good lluck to the Donut Gallery & may you have another 40 years of success!

While visiting the Key and after recently reading a very good review of this diner in the Miami Herald we chose to visit the diner for breakfast @10 a.m. on 7/31/12. Unfortunately, a small crew was working with a chipping hammer on the walkway outside the diner when we arrived and the noise inside and out was unbearable. We went in anyway and sat down at the counter. The place is minuscule with seating at the counter and a few tiny wall-mounted tabletops, each with room for a couple of patrons. The mica used for the counter/table tops must date from the 60's and is quite ugly. In attendance were 3-4 ladies and one older man, all were welcoming. Being that the article mentioned the original owner was Cuban and that now the son was running the diner, my husband asked for a café con leche only to be told they did not sell café con leche but that he could have American coffee with lots of milk.....a total abomination for anyone who's used to café con leche. We've never heard of a diner run by a Cuban family that doesn't offer Cuban coffee or café con leche, this is a first for us. We found the prices on the breakfast menu extremely high but went ahead and ordered anyway since we were already there. Another writer was correct, breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton would have run the two of us over $60.00, but it would have been $60.00 well spent. The almost $20.00 we spent at this diner was wasted money. We chose what we felt was the least expensive option: $8 for a plate of one egg, 2 strips of bacon, grits and 3 pancakes. They charged separately for one cup of American coffee. At $8.00 for breakfast, one would expect coffee to be included! The egg and bacon were OK, the grits were watery, without a grain of salt and with a huge pat of margarine melting on top; we immediately removed the margarine. The pancakes, on a separate plate, also had a huge pat of melting margarine on top which we also proceeded to remove. The imitation maple syrup sits on the counter in a very large plastic container. At these prices, butter should be offered instead of margarine. Based on the longevity of the diner and the very high prices being charged, the owner should: (1) take some pride in the diner, show concern for his patrons and update the diner while using features that will keep it in whatever era he wants to keep it in (2) replace the dishwasher which has cruddy black mold on the door which was opened in front of us numerous times while the steam hit our area as we tried to eat (3) ask the waitress who speaks perfect English and who appears to be Puerto Rican to tone it down a bit...the place is too small for her loudness (4) get with it and offer Cuban staples such as pastelitos, Cuban coffee and café con leche (5) taste those grits and perhaps someone will season them correctly and make them creamy...not soup of grits. My husband and I, after experiencing the diner today, could not believe the 4 and 5 stars and glowing reviews awarded to this diner in Yelp by many patrons nor the Miami Herald review. Have you people lost your marbles? Charm? Where was the charm hiding? A little expensive? It's outrageously expensive for what it is and for what it offers. It's old, run-down, depressing, overpriced and the food stinks. We will never visit this diner again and couldn't wait to leave. This is why one cannot believe every review one reads.

Great diner that has been around 40 years or so. Fast, cheap, with a warm atmosphere. An asset to the key.
